Description

Pacheco, Ferdie ‘Fight Doctor’ 1977 1st edition. 237-pagses. Very good condition in a very good non-price clipped mylar protected dust jacket. The frontispiece is inscribed “To Mondo, Good Luck & Health to you “champ” Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini and dated Jan-28-84.” I was able to reach Ray via Facebook Messenger and he replied, “Yep, I remember the book and that’s my signature from back then. Clay, whoever asked me to sign it, they asked me to sign for Mondo. It probably wouldn’t be the fighter, especially Mando Ramos. You see, he spelled it different.” I have a snip it of that exchange with Ray that will be included with the book. The title page is inscribed by two-time world champion Beau Jack: “Best Wishes From Beau Jack.” The signature next to his inscription looks to me like it could be the signature of the fighter, Jeff Sims. I queried AI about that and it thought that plausible as well and noted him as “another South Florida Pro who trained at the 5th Street Gym in Miami that Beau Jack trained in at the time, and Pacheco frequented. Laid in the book is also the 5th Street Gym business card of owner Roosevelt Ivory. He bought the gym in the early 1980s and was its owner during the period in which the book was signed. There’s another signature inside the front cover I’m unable to identify.

“Fight Doctor (originally published in 1977 by Futura Publications / W.H. Allen) is an intimate, raw, insider memoir written by Dr. Ferdie Pacheco, the longtime personal physician and cornerman to Muhammad Ali. Released at a pivotal moment—the very same year Pacheco famously walked away from Ali’s camp—the book provides a unique, unvarnished look at the peak and eventual physical decline of “The Greatest.

The Golden Era Inside the Corner: Pacheco details his 15-year journey alongside Ali and legendary trainer Angelo Dundee. He takes readers deep inside the locker rooms and corners of boxing’s most iconic historical bouts, including the Sonny Liston fights, the “Rumble in the Jungle” against George Foreman, and the brutal “Thrilla in Manila” against Joe Frazier.

The “Ali Circus”: The book pulls back the curtain on the chaotic entourage, promoters (like Don King), politicians, and hanger-on figures who surrounded Ali. Pacheco outlines how this overwhelming “circus” operated, how it fueled Ali’s celebrity, and how it occasionally complicated his training and personal life.

A Medical Perspective on Boxing: Unlike standard sports biographies, Pacheco writes from a clinical perspective. He examines the immense physical toll that heavy heavyweight boxing takes on the human body, detailing how he patched Ali up, managed his weight, and monitored his reflexes.

Ultimately, Fight Doctor serves as both a celebration of Ali’s unparalleled greatness and a sobering, historic warning about the long-term dangers of the sport.
