Description

Boxing by Philadelphia Jack O’Brien (written in collaboration with Dr. S.E. Bilik) is a foundational classic of sports instruction published as a hardcover edition in 1928 by Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York/London. Good condition hardcover with a worn complete grubby non-price clipped very scarce original dust jacket with some internal tape repairs.

NOTE: The name and address “John Gleneski, 12254 Cha… St., Detroit, Mich” and comment “Purpose: To learn the art thoroughly” is handwritten on the frontispiece by a former owner. The same party has added several handwritten comments on many pages throughout the book. Some may find them of interest, while others would prefer it without the comments. I have no idea who John Glenski was, though I’ve seen other instructional boxing books with his handwritten comments in them.

Book Description:
• Subject & Content: Authored by the legendary former World Light Heavyweight Champion, this 1928 instructional classic focuses heavily on the scientific, technical, and strategic elements of the sport. O’Brien breaks down master-class ring craft—emphasizing footwork, defensive head movement, and clinical punching styles—while Dr. Bilik injects sports medicine principles concerning physical training, anatomy, and peak conditioning.
• Format & Size: The volume features exactly 218 pages bound in a compact octavo format (measuring roughly 5″ x 7 ½”). The text is structurally designed to act as a definitive, easy-to-read manual for physical trainers and boxers.
• Original Bindings: First edition printings are typically housed in colored cloth boards (often dark olive green or navy cloth) featuring stamped lettering on the front cover and spine.
