Published in 1977, Dempsey is the personal autobiography of heavyweight boxing legend Jack Dempsey (the “Manassa Mauler”), written in collaboration with his stepdaughter, Barbara Piattelli Dempsey.
* Humble Beginnings: The book recounts Dempsey’s impoverished childhood in the American West and Colorado, where he worked as a coal miner and hoboed across the country, learning to fight in
rough-and-tumble saloons and mining camps just to survive.
* Rise to Stardom: It details his explosive ascent in the boxing world, highlighted by his brutal 1919 championship victory over Jess Willard, which catapulted him into global fame.
* The Roaring Twenties Icon: Dempsey chronicles his historic, record-setting title defenses, the cultural phenomenon of his massive “million-dollar gates”, and his legendary, dramatic bouts against
fighters like Gene Tunney (including the famous “long count”)
* Life Outside the Ring: Beyond his athletic career, the memoir explores his life in the public eye during the Roaring Twenties, his transition into a celebrity businessman and restaurateur in New York,
and his reflections on aging and a changing America.
* Tone and Style: Co-author Barbara Piattelli Dempsey frames the narrative to let Jack’s authentic voice and straightforward recollections drive the story, supported by a rich collection of vintage
photographs from his life inside and outside the ropes.
