Description

Dempsey, Jack ‘Dempsey’ 1960 1st ed. 249 pages. Good condition in a good non-price clipped dust jacket. The jacket has several very small chips along the top of the rear of the jacket, and some light wear, else good. Handwritten on the frontispiece of the book is the following by a former owner: “Property of George W. De Mott, P.O. Box 105, Milleville, Pa. Columbia County.” I assume that’s the following George De Mott that I found on-line:
“George DeMott performed for 45 years, touring with renowned circuses in the United States and Canada. He is said to have pioneered the introduction of juggling into school assemblies, presenting juggling programs that included the history of juggling, demonstrations of throwing tricks, balancing acts, and manipulations.

He was born George Wilbur DeMott on July 21, 1907, in Pennsylvania. He grew up on a farm in Millville. At 18, he worked as a doorman at the Fox Theatre in Philadelphia, where he met Harry Houdini, juggler William Hilton, and other artists who inspired him forever.

He began his artistic career at age 25 as a clown, touring the United States and Canada with various circuses, including the Hagenbeck & Wallace Circus, the Cole Bros. Circus, the Keller’s Society Circus, the Wallace Bros. Circus, and The Mackey Players. He also performed in parks, fairs, and department stores during the Christmas season, including a four-year run at Gimbel’s in Pittsburgh.”
