Barrow Louis, Joe – Joe Louis. 50 Years an American Hero leather commemorative edition

Description

Barrow Louis, Joe – Joe Louis. 50 Years an American Hero. 1988 leather covered commemorative edition published by McGraw-Hill Book Company. Very good condition.

The 1988 leather-bound commemorative edition of Joe Louis: 50 Years An American Hero by Joe Louis Barrow Jr. and Barbara Munder is a premium, deluxe presentation of the acclaimed oral biography. Specially produced by McGraw-Hill to mark the 50th anniversary of Louis’s historic 1938 victory over Max Schmeling, this volume was designed specifically as a high-end collector’s keepsake.

Physical and Deluxe Binding Features:
• Exterior: Bound in a premium padded burgundy/brown leather or leatherette finish. The front cover features a deeply debossed ruled border accented by bright gold foil stamped lettering and a commemorative seal.
• Gilt Edges & Spine: The spine features elegant, raised hubs and gold lettering. All three outer edges of the paper text block are gilded in brilliant gold to prevent dust damage and add a luxury aesthetic.
• Interior Accents: The inner covers open to striking marbled endpapers, and the text is printed on heavy, archival-quality paper designed to resist yellowing over time. It was issued natively without a paper dust jacket.

Content and Collector Distinction:
While it shares the same core text, rare family photographs, and touching oral histories as the standard trade edition, this commemorative printing acts as a formal tribute piece. Because it was heavily used by Joe Louis Barrow Jr. for promotional book tours, many surviving copies feature his hand-signed inscription on the blank introductory pages, making it a highly visual and sentimentally valuable centerpiece for boxing historians and collectors of sports memorabilia.
