Johnson, Jack ‘My Life & Battles’ edited and translated by Christopher Rivers. Foreword by Geoffrey Ward. 2007. 127-pages. Praeger. Westport, Connecticut. London.

“The 2007 book My Life and Battles is the first English translation of a virtually unknown French-language memoir written by Jack Johnson, the first African American heavyweight boxing champion. Translated by scholar Christopher Rivers and published by Praeger in October 2007, the text was originally compiled from a 1911 autobiographical article series in La vie au grand air and subsequently revised into the 1914 French book Mes combats. Rivers discovered the rare text after finding that only one complete library copy existed at Harvard University.

The memoir provides a candid, firsthand account of Johnson’s colorful life both inside and outside the ring, tracing his journey from growing up in Galveston, Texas, through the rise of his boxing career. It details his training regimens, his strategic mindset, and chronological breakdowns of his historic bouts. The narrative culminates with his historic July 4, 1910 “Fight of the Century” defeat of Jim Jeffries in Reno, Nevada, an event that famously triggered nationwide race riots.

Beyond boxing, the book features:
Political Exploits: A humorous recount of his brief stint as a local politician. Era Portraits: Personal character sketches of famous fighters from the 1900–1915 boxing era. Vignettes of his highly mobile, optimistic lifestyle traveling to Europe and Australia despite the immense racial barriers of the 1900s.

Unfiltered Commentary on Race: Writing specifically for a French audience rather than an American public, Johnson speaks with unprecedented bluntness about race and boxing’s “color line”.

Self-Mythologizing and Voice: The text serves as an exercise in self-fashioning, revealing how Johnson viewed himself and wanted to be remembered. His authentic voice emerges as witty, brash, theatrical, and charming—previewing the archetype later popularized by Muhammad Ali.”
