Description
Poole Bros. Rare limited-edition hardcover in slipcase. ‘Making Ring HIstory’ on the spine cover. Title page: ‘John L. Sullivan, Heavyweight Champion of the World James J. Corbett, Challenger of the Title Holder, And Their Great Fight, New Orleans 1892.’ 9″ x 11 1/2″. Both the book and slipcase are in very good + condition. The book is comprised of a total of 33-pages and includes a large full-page reproduction foldout bout in the book of the Chicago Daily Tribune’s recount of this 1892 title fight. This was limited edition of 10, so is a very rare item. There is no date of publication provided. The only thing I know for sure is that it had to be sometime after 1933 because there is a section mentioning Corbett’s death in 1933.
Book Description:
• Historical Significance: The volume memorializes the September 7, 1892, heavyweight championship fight at the Olympic Club in New Orleans. This was one of the most important events in sports history: the watershed moment where the legendary bare-knuckle champion John L. Sullivan (the “Boston Strong Boy”) was defeated by James J. “Gentleman Jim” Corbett. It marked the end of the bare-knuckle era and the official dawn of modern gloved boxing under the Marquess of Queensberry Rules.
• Physical Features: The book measures 9″ x 11 1/2″ and is bound as a hardcover presented in a custom slipcase. Spanning 33 pages, its centerpiece is an expansive, full-page reproduction foldout replicating the Chicago Daily Tribune’s original, firsthand newspaper coverage of the 1892 fight.
• Scarcity: With an incredibly small print run of only 10 copies, this is an artifact of extreme rarity, likely produced for a tiny circle of elite boxing historians or corporate executives.
