Description

Monaghan, Paddy ‘Black Crusoe White Friday.’ Memoirs of a fanatical Irish Muhammad Ali fan and his relationship with Ali 1979 1st ed. 103-pages. VG/VG

“Black Crusoe, White Friday: Memoirs of ‘Paddy-Ali’, Irish Eccentric” is a 103-page illustrated biography written by Paddy Monaghan and published by Satellite Books in 1979.
The book is a vivid, first-hand account detailing the author’s unlikely and intense friendship with boxing legend Muhammad Ali. After Ali was stripped of his World Heavyweight Title for refusing to fight in the Vietnam War, Monaghan launched a passionate, three-year public campaign across London and Oxford to support the fighter. This led to him becoming part of Ali’s inner circle. The memoir juxtaposes the surreal, unaccustomed luxury Monaghan experienced as “Muhammad’s right-hand man”—including free trips to America, stays in sumptuous hotel suites, and rides in chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royces—with his eventual return to reality, poverty, and life on social security back home in Abingdon, England.
