Book Summary:
The novel is deeply rooted in the world of early 20th-century prizefighting. The opening scenes of the story are dramatically set in Reno, Nevada, against the backdrop of the historic 1910 heavyweight championship fight between Jack Johnson and James J. Jeffries. Out of the book’s 21 total chapters, 15 are explicitly focused on boxing. It follows the trials, physical culture, and grit required in the development of a prizefighter. Hales dedicated the book to the memory of the legendary English bare-knuckle era boxer Charley Mitchell, noting in the inscription that Mitchell had helped him sketch out the specific chapters regarding “the making of a Real Champion” before his passing.
