* Mario, Matty 'Bad Boy' 1939 1st ed. 255-page boxing novel. Scarce title with an even scarcer dust jacket. The hardcover is in good condition. The dust jacket has a 1/8th inch loss at the top of the spine and is price clipped but otherwise complete and is pasted on the book and has a bit of  wear. Still presentable and tough to find this book at all and especially with a jacket. From the jacket flap: "Prizefighter turns author seemed like a man biting dog, to a number of my acquantances. It seemed to call for an explanation. The urge to wrtie a book daes back to 1926. Jack (Doc) Kearns and Teddy Hayes were managing me and I was training in Hollywood, California, with Baby Joe Gans and Young Jack Thompson for my fight with Jackie Fields. I lost a close decision and Fields soon after became World's Welterweight Champion. One day, after my last training session for the Fields bout, Hayes and I were driving toward Kearns home. Out of the corner of his eye, Hayes watched me as I stared gloomily into space and asked me what was troubling me - if I was homesick. "Yeah, I moaned sadly, guess its got me, Teddy wish I were back on Staten Island. "Better snap out if, Kid," Hayes replied, "this Fields fight is your big opportunity and you've got to keep your mind on the job. By the way - what do you think of that big boy I introduced you to this afternoon..... "That was Max Baer," Hayes went on, "And he'd be a bigger 'wow' as you put it as a fighter - if he'd only take himself more seriously,. Think it over kid." I did think it over, that and experience istilled in me the desire to write about the fight game. I hope you will derive as much pleasure in reading "Bad Boy" as I did in writing it."  $75.
